Research Centres & Services

AUT University has a number of world class research centres that offer consulting and contract services to external clients.

AUT Enterprises Limited in association with the AUT Research Office work closely with the research staff to ensure the consultancy and contract research needs of our clients, are fulfilled to the highest standard. Our aim is to build mutually-beneficial and long term relationships with industry partners.

Food Science Research Centre

Human existence is maintained on the basis that we give our bodies access to sufficient nutrition. An understanding of food at a scientific level is vital to better understand its impact on our health and our economy’s health, as New Zealand relies heavily on exporting food.

The area of food science has a strong presence at AUT University and incorporates research in food chemistry, food microbiology, food technology and biofilms. The Food Science Research Centre offers access to expert researchers and cutting-edge facilities.

Textile & Design Laboratory

The Textile & Design Laboratory (TD+L) was officially opened in November 2006 for the purposes of Training and Education, Research and Product Development. The idea of creating a cutting edge textile facility was supported by industry, other tertiary organisations and the New Zealand Government. One of the key objectives of the T+DL is to contribute to the growth and development of the NZ fashion and textile industries. The lab has invested in Computer Aided Design systems, Digital Textile Printing and Whole Garment® knitting machinery. Industry advisors help to keep the lab in touch with the private sector and help to support projects with their specialist knowledge.

The T+DL is unique in that it is the only facility in New Zealand that houses design, knitwear and digital print technology that is not being used for full time commercial production. Customised and innovative new products can be developed without the need to commit to anything more than a ’virtual sample’.

Industrial Information & Control Centre

The Industrial Information and Control Centre (I2C2) is a joint collaboration between AUT and the University of Auckland and was established in 2007. Our team is multidisciplinary group of chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineers with backgrounds from pulp and paper to dairy, aluminium and biotechnology.

Services available:

  • System modelling
  • Software design
  • APC tuning and assessment
  • Onsite training
